A US$20 billion (US$1.14 million) waste treatment plant, the biggest of
its kind in the Mekong Delta, is in a testing phase ahead of being put
into operation next month, a key investor said Tuesday.
The plant, in Vinh Long Province’s
Hoa Phu Industrial Zone, was originally due to come into operation last
year, said Ha Huy Dung, deputy director of Hoa Phu Joint-Stock Company,
an investor in the Hoa Phu Industrial Zone.
The plant, funded by the
provincial government, will be capable of treating 4,000 cubic meters
of raw sewage per day using European technology.
A boom in industrial zones in 13
Mekong Delta cities and provinces has seriously polluted the region’s
environment in recent years.
The region discharges about
222,000 tons of solid industrial waste and more than 47 million cubic
meters of industrial sewage every year, according to the Southwestern
Environment Protection Bureau.
Most industrial zones in the
Mekong Delta are located near rivers or canals, so raw sewage is dumped
directly into the waterways.
